This bio-bibliographical dictionary contains about 800 cross-referenced biographies on early dramatists active in North America and the Caribbean from colonial times up to 1849, together with their nearly 4000 plays and a detailed bibliography with each entry. Thus a gap in current literary documentation is filled up.
The dictionary presents early American playwrights with their various socio-cultural backgrounds, and names well-known authors as well as many less known or totally forgotten persons who contributed to American drama in the colonial era, during the revolutionary period, and in the years following the formation of the United States.
With its extensive bibliographical references, this dictionary is intended for literary historians and students, but should also be valuable to any reader interested in early American theater. It may also give a new impetus to further research in early American dramatic literature and its writers.
